ABOUT US

Landscape design informed by site conditions, project objectives and thoughtful decision-making

Jasper Green is a Sydney-based landscape design practice focused on helping homeowners, property owners and developers make informed decisions about outdoor spaces.

Every site presents a unique combination of opportunities and constraints. Sunlight, access, privacy, topography, existing vegetation, maintenance requirements and the way a space is intended to function all influence what is realistically achievable. Rather than applying predetermined solutions, Jasper Green approaches each project as a response to the specific conditions of the site and the goals of the people who will use it.

The objective is not simply to create attractive landscapes. It is to develop outdoor environments that are functional, appropriate to their context and capable of performing well over time.

Design begins with understanding

Successful landscape outcomes rarely begin with a design concept.

They begin with understanding.

Before recommendations can be made, it is important to understand the site, the opportunities and constraints that exist, and the objectives the project is intended to achieve. This belief forms the foundation of the Jasper Green design process.

Every project begins with a Site Diagnostic and a clear definition of project objectives. By taking the time to understand the problem before developing solutions, it becomes possible to make more informed decisions and establish a stronger foundation for the work that follows.

The result is a process that prioritises clarity, reduces uncertainty and ensures design recommendations are grounded in the realities of the site.

Every site is different

No two projects are the same.

A compact courtyard in Glebe presents different challenges from a rooftop terrace in Surry Hills. A small front garden in Annandale requires a different response from a family garden in the Inner West. The conditions, opportunities and priorities of each project will vary, and so too should the design response.

For this reason, Jasper Green does not follow a predetermined style, formula or signature palette.

Design decisions are informed by site conditions, project objectives and long-term performance considerations rather than trends or preconceived ideas about how a space should look.

The goal is to create landscapes that feel appropriate to their setting and support the way people want to use them.

Balancing function, aesthetics and long-term performance

Landscape design involves balancing competing priorities.

Projects often require careful consideration of privacy and openness, shade and sunlight, planting and usable space, visual appeal and ongoing maintenance. There is rarely a single decision that maximises every objective simultaneously.

Successful outcomes are typically the result of understanding these trade-offs and making deliberate decisions about where compromises should occur.

This requires more than selecting plants or arranging outdoor features. It requires an understanding of how different decisions influence the overall performance of a landscape over time.

By considering both immediate objectives and long-term outcomes, it becomes possible to create outdoor environments that remain functional, resilient and enjoyable long after installation.

Communication is part of the design process

Many project frustrations can be traced back to misunderstandings, unclear objectives or assumptions that were never properly tested.

For this reason, communication forms an important part of the design process.

Jasper Green places significant emphasis on understanding project goals, clarifying priorities and confirming requirements before design work begins. This includes the use of a Reverse Brief to ensure there is a shared understanding of the project’s objectives, opportunities and constraints.

When project goals are clearly defined, it becomes easier to evaluate design decisions, manage expectations and maintain alignment throughout the life of the project.

About the consultancy

Jasper Green was established from a belief that thoughtful design begins with understanding people, environments and the challenges that connect them.

With decades of experience in design, strategy and problem-solving, the practice brings an analytical approach to landscape design that combines creativity with human centred design and careful investigation. This perspective informs the way projects are approached, from understanding site conditions and client requirements through to developing recommendations that respond appropriately to both.

Rather than viewing landscape design as the arrangement of individual elements, Jasper Green approaches each project as a system of interconnected decisions that collectively shape the experience and performance of an outdoor space.

Thoughtful landscapes start with informed decisions

Every landscape project represents an investment of time, resources and trust.

The role of landscape design is not simply to determine what should be built. It is to help establish why particular decisions are being made and how those decisions contribute to the broader objectives of the project.

By combining site analysis, clear communication and thoughtful design recommendations, Jasper Green helps clients navigate complexity, reduce uncertainty and create outdoor spaces that are appropriate, functional and enduring.
